iPhone SOS: Decoding the Emergency Signal on Your Device

Ever wondered what "SOS" means on your iPhone and why it suddenly appears? It's more than just a random abbreviation; it's your iPhone's way of calling for help!

SOS mode is an emergency feature designed to quickly contact emergency services and your designated emergency contacts. When activated, your iPhone will automatically call local emergency services. After the call ends, it can also send a text message to your emergency contacts, sharing your current location (if location services are enabled).

There are a couple of ways to trigger SOS. On newer iPhones (iPhone 8 and later), you typically press and hold the side button and one of the volume buttons simultaneously until the Emergency SOS slider appears. Drag the slider to call. On older iPhones (iPhone 7 and earlier), you rapidly press the side (or top) button five times.

Knowing how to use SOS could be life-saving. Make sure you understand how it works on your iPhone model and update your emergency contacts in the Health app. Stay safe!
