Don't Let Swimmer's Ear Ruin Your Summer: Otitis Externa Self-Care Tips!

That itchy, painful ear is back? You might have swimmer's ear, also known as otitis externa! Before rushing to the doctor, try some at-home self-care to ease your discomfort.

First, keep your ear DRY. This is crucial. Avoid swimming and protect your ear during showers with cotton balls coated in petroleum jelly (Vaseline). Tilt your head to let water drain out after any exposure. A hairdryer on a low, cool setting can also help dry the ear canal.

Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can manage pain and reduce inflammation. Warm compresses can also provide soothing relief.

Avoid inserting anything into your ear canal, including cotton swabs. These can irritate the skin further and potentially push bacteria deeper.

If your symptoms don't improve within 24-48 hours, or if you experience fever, severe pain, or drainage from your ear, see a doctor. You may need prescription ear drops to combat the infection. With proper self-care and medical attention when needed, you'll be back to enjoying summer in no time!
