Unlike deleting your account (which permanently removes everything), deactivation simply hides your profile, photos, comments, and likes from other users. Think of it as putting your account on pause.
So, how do you do it? You can't deactivate through the app itself, you'll need to use a web browser (on your phone or computer). Head to Instagram.com and log in.
Then, go to your profile and click 'Edit Profile'. Scroll down and you'll find a link that says "Temporarily disable my account". Click it! Instagram will ask why you're leaving (they're nosy like that!). Choose a reason from the dropdown menu and re-enter your password. Finally, click the "Temporarily Disable Account" button.
That's it! You're free from the Insta-grip... for now. To reactivate, just log back in with your username and password.
